The Baron Ardossan (1) was a cargo steamship with auxiliary sails, built at Whitby in 1881. She left Glasgow on August 20th 1898 with a cargo of coal bound for St. Malo but sank the following day in thick fog near Porthgain.

The wreck lies in a sheltered cove at a depth of 10m to 12m, making it a good 2nd dive or novice dive.

Turning left after leaving Porthgain harbour, the wreck is in a cove around the first headland. It lies on the RHS as you enter the cove and is usually marked with lobster pot buoys. The wreck is well broken up and flat-packed as you would expect after over a century underwater but there is a lot to see, especially the remains of the boiler which are still fairly substantial. There is never much current but there can be a swell.

There is a good account of the sinking in Volume 1 of Shipwrecks around Wales
by Tom Bennet.
