Llwchwr Sub Aqua Club is located at Loughor, near Swansea in south Wales. We are affiliated to theBritsih Sub Aqua Club (BSAC) and to theWelsh Association of Sub Aqua Clubs (WASAC) and undertake a comprehensive BSAC training schedule both in scuba diving and in snorkling; and welcome any new members, either complete beginners or qualified divers, who may wish to join us.
On most weekends during the summer, diving takes
place either at various locations around west Wales, Skomer, Skokholm,
Ramsey, Milford Haven etc or else nearer to home around the Gower
coast. We also try to go abroad
as a club once or twice a year to places like the Red Sea, Lanzarote,
Ireland, Maldives etc.
We have our own towing vehicle and our boat is a purpose-built 6.5 metre Cobra RIB, from Picton Boats in Bridgend, with a 150hp Mercury Optimax engine and is an
absolute dream!
Membership
New members are always welcome whether you are completely new to the sport or are already a qualified diver. We are a BSAC affiliated club so those who are new to the sport undertake a BSAC Ocean Diver training course, details
of which would be on the BSAC website. Those who have qualified under another affiliation (SAA, PADI etc.) would need to do a short cross-over course to become BSAC qualified.
Training usually begins around
October when we meet at Penyrheol Pool in Gorseinon on Sunday nights
at 8.00 pm. Training continues through the winter months and the
first open water dives then take place around April at the National Dive Centre at Chepstow or at the upper Lliw Resevoir, in preparation for the season ahead. Snorkel training
for younger members also takes place on Sunday evenings at Penyrheol pool.
Qualified divers who may wish to join our club are welcome to come
along on to our pool sessions on Sundays to have a swim and we usually meet in the bar after
pool training.
Further Training
After finishing the initial Ocean Diver training you will be ready to go diving with us, although you will be restricted to a certain number of dive sites. However, your training does not end there as we will then take you through the various BSAC training grades; Sports Diver, Dive Leader and then hopefully up to Advanced diver. How far you wish to follow this schedule is entirely up to you and what you are comfortable with. However progressing to a Sport Diver does give you a certain independence when it comes to diving abroad on holiday for instance. Progressing to Ocean Diver is incuded in your first year membership fee (see below and further progression is subject to a nominal club charge plus a small charge for the relevant BSAC documentation.
Diving is not the only training we do. Should you wish to teach others to dive then we offer Instructor Foundation courses as well as Boat Handling and Boat Coxn courses so that you can drive our club boat. Why not get in touch to find out what we are able to offer you?
Our club membership is currently £130.00 per annum. This is either payable in full at the start of
each year or by setting up a standing order for 10 monthly payments of £13.00. Junior and student
members pay £65.00. Should you join later on in the year your membership would be £13.00 per month until the year end.
In addition all members will need to
join BSAC at a current cost of £52.00 per annum. With discounts for students and multiple members at the same address. BSAC membership
includes dive insurance and a yearly subscription to DIVE magazine.
(see their website for details). In addition new members will be
charged an additional £ 30.00 for Ocean Diver training plus
a starter pack from BSAC, which includes books, documentation etc,
which costs another £45.00.
Consequently membership (with BSAC membership) at current rates
is £ 257.00 for your first year and £182.00 per annum
thereafter. For those under 18 or still in full time education the
first year membership is £166.00 and £91.00 thereafter.
Further training to Sports diver or Dive Leader is free to club members, only the BSAC fees for documentation will be charged.
When we go diving there is a charge of £10.00 per person per
day to help maintain the boat, and we also add the fuel cost of
the towing vehicle and a support vehicle to the cost of boat fuel and divide that amongst
the divers present.
Equipment can be expensive when you start out, however the club
does have a limited number of sets of kit which are used for training
in the winter and these can be hired to new members or infrequent
diving members through the diving season for a nominal cost. Should prospective members
wish to know what a complete diving kit would cost them, please get in touch with us, also Day's
Diversified Services on (01792) 57977, are very helpful
and can go through things with you. Don't forget second hand kit
is always available, especially on ebay.
Non Members
If there is room on the boat non club members are welcome to join us for a day's diving. Our own members obviously have first call on a place aboard and non members would be expected to bring along their diving qualification card. Non members pay an extra £10.00 to club funds above the usual costs listed above.
Why not come out a few times to see how you get on before joining our club?
